SALISBURY, Md. – Mike Winter scored his game-high fourth goal of the game just 1:59 into overtime to send Salisbury to its fourth national championship game at M&T Bank Stadium as the Sea Gulls handed Stevenson a 14-13 loss Sunday at Sea Gull Stadium in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship.
The loss snapped a 14-game road win streak for the Mustangs (19-2) and was their first at Sea Gull Stadium since a 20-10 defeat on April 20, 2008.
While Stevenson finished one game short of its goal by making its second-straight appearance in the national semifinals, it doesn’t diminish its record-setting accomplishments over the last two seasons.
During that time, the Mustangs have gone 36-4, posting a school record for wins in both seasons and finishing the year ranked No. 1 while winning the school’s first CAC championship.
“I think we proved we’re not a fluke,” said head coach Paul Cantabene. “It was a great year and we are going to build on it. We lost to one team.”
“It is definitely developing into a good rivalry,” said Salisbury head coach Jim Berkman. “There has been a lot of great games and a lot of great crowds. A lot of college lacrosse players would love to play in an atmosphere like this. The teams are really close.”
Sunday featured a 54-minute lightning delay with Salisbury leading 8-6 with 13:32 remaining in the third quarter. Following the delay, CAC Player of the Year Sam Bradman scored his first point with an unassisted goal to push the lead to three.
However, Stevenson responded with the first of two, three-goal rallies to tie the game at 9-9 behind unassisted goals from senior Tyler Maguire (Montauk, N.Y./East Hampton), senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) and junior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East).
Matt Cannone scored back-to-back goals off assists from Mike Von Kamecke before Bradman added his second unassisted tally to push the lead back to three with 1:58 left in the third.
Cannone and Von Kamecke combined for 11 points with each contributing three goals. Von Kamecke scored all three of his goals during Salisbury’s 4-0 second quarter run that erased a two-goal deficit and gave the team a 7-5 advantage.
Stevenson mounted its second, three-goal comeback on a man-up goal by junior Neal Barthelme (Towson/Dulaney) right before the end of the third quarter. The Mustangs finished the game 3-of-9 on extra-man opportunities.
Senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney), who totaled 49 saves in Stevenson’s first NCAA championship victories, made two big stops to start the fourth quarter while goals by junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) and sophomore Andrew McCrumb (Elkridge/Mount Saint Joseph) tied the game at 12-12 with 12:32 to play.
Not to be outdone, Hebert’s counterpart, Johnny Rodriguez, made two point blank saves, including the second on Kazimer who scooped the first rebound right on the crease, before Winter put the Sea Gulls back in front, 13-12.
A caused turnover by senior Christian Clark (Arnold/Mount Saint Joseph) and the corresponding ground ball by junior Evan Douglass (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) led to a Stevenson timeout and a behind-the-back goal from Ford to tie the game for the seventh time at 13-13 with just 1:51 left in regulation.
The Mustangs had a chance to win in regulation, but after working the clock down to the waning seconds, a desperation shot by Kazimer went wide with two seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime.
“We wanted to take the last shot,” said Kazimer. “I got the shot, I just didn’t put it on the cage.”
Sunday marked the second time in school history that Stevenson had played back-to-back overtime games with the previous coming in 2005. That year, the team also won the first and lost the second.
Junior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul), who won 12 of the game’s final 16 face-offs over the second half and overtime, gave the Mustangs the first possession in overtime, but Moffitt was stripped by Connor Burgasser.
Following a Salisbury timeout, Winter’s scored his team-leading fifth game-winning goal of the season on a feed from Bradman with 2:01 remaining in overtime.
Kazimer finished with three points to set a new single-season school record with 95 while Ford totaled three goals to finish with 58 this season, one shy of his school record set in 2008.
Meanwhile, Witte set a new school record with 300 face-off wins this season while totaling a record 168 ground balls, including 16 on Sunday, one shy of the single-game record.
“We really respect their program,” said Cantabene. “They were the better team today. We want to be where they are and we feel we are real close. We were just one shot away today.”
“We will learn from this experience coming back and we will be better next year.”

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) capped a three-goal rally over the game’s final six minutes, scoring the game-winner with 2:53 left into overtime as the No. 1 Stevenson men’s lacrosse team defeated No. 5 Roanoke, 15-14 Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship at Caves Athletics Complex.
The win was the ninth-straight for the Mustangs (19-1) who advance to the national semifinals for the second consecutive year and continue to add to their school record for wins in a season which was 17 set a year ago.
It was also Stevenson’s second victory over Roanoke (18-3) at home this season after the two teams hadn’t met since 2001 and was a lot closer than their regular season meeting on March 27 in which the Mustangs won 18-9.
The Mustangs are 21-3 at home the last two seasons.
After stopping 22 shots in the team’s second round victory over No. 8 Cabrini, Stevenson senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) made a career-high 27 on Wednesday, including 15 in the second half.
In five games in the NCAA championship, Hebert has posted a 4-1 record while posting a career-high in saves in three of those games.
Trailing 14-12, junior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winters Mill) scored his second goal with 4:15 remaining in the fourth quarter before junior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) tied the game just 1:06 later with his third of the contest off a pass from senior Dave Cougler (Rochester, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley).
Wednesday’s game featured seven ties and five lead changes and the Mustangs rallied from three separate two-goal deficits, including a 3-0 margin to start the game after the Maroons scored the game’s first three goals in the first 4:44.
Despite being outshot 72-40, Stevenson had three shots in the final 3:09, two of which were saved by Roanoke’s Jake Dorsey and a third that hit the crossbar. The Maroons had two shots during that span, one of which was blocked and the other that was saved by Hebert.
After junior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul) won his 15th face-off the game to start overtime, Stevenson called a timeout to set up its offensive attack in the sudden victory period before Ford netted his fifth goal of the game with his team-leading fifth game-winning goal of the season.
Senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger), who picked up the assist on Ford’s game-winner, finished with three on the day, raising his season point total to 92 and tying him with Eric Schmith for the school’s single-season record.
Kazimer also has 47 assists this season, surpassing his 2008 total of 46 into second place behind Schmith’s record of 55.
Meanwhile, Ford, who ranked second on that list with 86 in 2008, now has 88, including 54 goals, five shy of his single-season record set two years ago.
With eight ground balls, Witte now has 152 this season, moving him into first place on the school’s single-season list past Matt Krastel’s mark of 146 set in 1998. Witte also continues to add to his single-season school record for face-off wins and now has 282.
Stevenson awaits the winner of the Haverford-Salisbury game Wednesday night. If Haverford wins, the Mustangs and Fords will meet at Caves Athletics Complex on Sunday for the first time since 1999 when Stevenson won on the road, 13-8.
If Salisbury wins, the Mustangs and Sea Gulls will meet at Sea Gull Stadium, marking the sixth meeting between the two in the last two seasons with Stevenson owning a 3-2 record.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson men’s lacrosse senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) totaled a career-high saves while six different starters scored at least three points as the No. 1-ranked Mustangs outscored No. 8 Cabrini 17-7 over the final three quarters en route to a 19-9 victory Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship.
The win was the eighth-straight for Stevenson (18-1) this season and its third in four NCAA championship games after the team went 2-1 a year ago in advancing to the national semifinals.
The Mustangs will now face a rematch with No. 5 Roanoke on Wednesday in the quarterfinals after the Maroons defeated No. 4 Gettysburg on the road Saturday, 11-10 in overtime. Game time and gameday information will be available on Monday.
As for Saturday’s victory, Stevenson defeated its former CSAC rival for the second-straight year in the second round after last year’s 8-7 victory at home. Hebert totaled a then-career-high 15 saves as the Mustangs won their first-ever NCAA championship game.
This year, the two teams were again engaged in a close battle as the game was tied at 2-2 at the end of the first quarter and deadlocked at 4-4 following an unassisted goal by the Cavaliers’ Jeff Crosby with 3:41 left in the second.
However, the nation’s fourth-ranked scoring offense, Stevenson scored the game’s next four goals, all in a span of just 1:04 to take a commanding 8-4 advantage with 2:11 remaining.
Junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) scored twice during the run while junior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winters Mill) and junior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) each netted one. Kazimer picked up an assist on three of the four goals.
Cabrini defender John McSorley added an unassisted goal with 1:40 left to cut the Cavaliers’ halftime deficit to three, but they wouldn’t get any closer as the Mustangs opened the second half by scoring five of the first six goals in the first five minutes to push the advantage to seven, 13-6.
Kazimer finished with seven points on two goals and five assists and now has 241 points in three seasons, just seven shy of Eric Schmith’s school record. Kazimer also has 126 assists, 11 shy of Schmith’s record.
Moffitt tied a career-high with six points for the third time this season, totaling five goals and one assist. He also had six points with a career-high six goals against Stevenson’s next opponent, Roanoke back on March 27.
Dailey and junior Neal Barthelme (Towson/Dulaney) each finished with five points with Dailey totaling three goals and two assists to reach career milestones in all three categories as he now has 202 points on 102 goals and 100 assists in three seasons.
Barthelme had two goals and a career-high three assists.
Ford and senior Sean Calabrese (Rockville/DeMatha) finished with three goals apiece.
Junior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul) won 19-of-30 face-offs and had five ground balls, raising his season totals to 354 career wins and 144 ground balls. He is just two ground balls shy of a new single season school record and only 27 wins shy of current assistant coach Greg Furshman’s career record of 381.
Hebert totaled 14 of his 22 saves in the second and third quarters and improved his record as a starter to 26-2, including 3-1 in the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship.
Brian Hill led the Cavaliers (15-4) with three goals and one assist while Andrew Protenic had two goals and Bobby Thorp added two assists. Casey Grugan finished with one goal to break his own school single season record with 97 points.
Owings Mills native and Pikesville High School graduate Erick Zarzecki, who started all 19 of the team’s games in goal in his first collegiate season, made 13 saves.
SALISBURY, Md. – For the first time in the 16-year history of the CAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship, there is a new champion as eight different players scored and senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) totaled 13 saves as No. 3 Stevenson posted a 10-6 victory over No. 1-ranked and undefeated Salisbury Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium.
The third time proved to be the charm as the Mustangs (16-1) had lost the last two-straight CAC championship games against the Sea Gulls in 2008 and 2009.
Stevenson has also won three of the last five meetings with Salisbury, including the last two at Sea Gull Stadium after the team snapped the Sea Gulls’ 105-game CAC unbeaten streak with a 12-8 victory on Apr. 4, 2009.
Also of note, the visiting team has won five of the last six meetings in the series.
Saturday’s title game featured four ties and two lead changes and just like the first meeting this season on April 3, the contest was tied at halftime.
However, unlike the first time where Salisbury outscored the Mustangs 8-2 in the second half on their home field, Stevenson returned the favor, outscoring Salisbury 6-2, including the final four goals of the game to break open a 6-6 tie while Hebert totaled seven of his 13 saves.
All six goals came from different players, including back-to-back tallies on a laser by junior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and a behind-the-back goal from junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) just 53 seconds apart to start the four-goal run.
Junior Kenny Whittaker (Baltimore/Curley) added an empty net goal with 3:00 remaining as Sea Gull keeper Johnny Rodriguez was out applying defensive pressure before junior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul) provided an insurance goal just seven seconds later after winning the face-off and running down uncontested for his eighth goal of the season.
After being outshot 15-7 in the first quarter and falling behind 2-1, the Mustangs held a 33-25 edge the rest of the way.
Hebert, who had five saves in the opening quarter, led a defensive effort that forced 21 turnovers. Junior Evan Douglass (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) totaled a career-high seven caused turnovers and picked up four ground balls while senior Mike Gustowarow (Annapolis/DeMatha) added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Dailey, Ford and junior Neal Barthelme (Towson/Dulaney) each had two points with Ford and Barthelme finding the back of the net twice.
Saturday’s championship marks the first in any sport for Stevenson since the school joined the CAC in all sports beginning with the 2007-08 academic year. The lacrosse teams have been a member since the 2007 season.
In addition to the men’s lacrosse team, the Mustangs have had three other teams advance to the CAC title game over the last two seasons: baseball (2009), men’s soccer (2009) and women’s soccer (2009).
Matt Cannone and Mike Von Kamecke had three points apiece for the Sea Gulls (17-1) who suffered just their fourth loss in the last 102 games at home dating back to the 2003 season with two of those losses coming to Stevenson.
Johnny Rodriquez finished with 16 saves for Salisbury.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) had three goals and one assist while senior Tyler Maguire (Montauk, N.Y./East Hampton) added one goal and one assist as the No. 1-ranked Stevenson men’s lacrosse team closed the regular season with a 13-9 victory over No. 14 Denison Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.
The Mustangs (17-1), who finished the season with seven consecutive wins and went 8-1 at home, will now await the selections for the 2010 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship next Sunday, May 9 at 10:00 p.m., on CBS College Sports to see who and when they will play in their next game.
Junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) led all scorers with six points on three goals and three assists as Stevenson scored six of the game’s first eight goals to lead 6-2 with 4:06 remaining in the second quarter.
The first 25 minutes proved to be the difference for the Mustangs as both teams scored seven goals apiece the remaining 35. In building a four-goal advantage during that first 25 minutes, Stevenson outshot the Big Red, 28-13.
Denison (10-3), who suffered its first loss in eight non-conference games this season, tallied two goals in the final three minutes of the second quarter by Alex Hardt and Emmett Jones just 11 seconds apart to cut their deficit to 6-4 at the half.
However, that would be as close as the Big Red would get as the Mustangs opened the second half with back-to-back goals by Ford and Kazimer and outscored Denison by one in both the third and fourth quarter to maintain its final margin of four.
Junior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winters Mill) remains just shy of three career milestones as he finished with two goals and one assist and now has 197 career points on 99 goals and 98 assists.
Senior Sean Calabrese (Rockville/DeMatha) had two assists while senior Dave Cougler (Rochester, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) added one assist. Senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) made 10 saves in winning his 10th game this season and is now 26-2 as a starter.
Jones and Hardt combined for seven of the Big Red’s nine goals as they totaled four and three, respectively. Gregg Shannon had 13 saves.

Once Upon A Mattress is a romantic, melodic, rollicking spin on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. A raucously dysfunctional royal family holds court in this tongue-in-moat adaptation set in medieval times where a king is cursed to silence, his queen has taken control and won’t let her prince marry, and a kingdom that can’t marry until the prince does. You figure it out!

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Johnny Rodriguez totaled 10 of his 15 saves in the second half as Salisbury broke open an 8-8 halftime tie with eight goals, outscoring Stevenson 8-2 as the No. 2-ranked Sea Gulls handed the No. 1 Mustangs their first loss Saturday, April 3, 16-9 at Caves Athletics Complex.
The loss snapped a 27-game regular season win streak for Stevenson (10-1, 2-1 CAC) and was their first CAC loss since Apr. 5, 2008. Ironically, both streaks started following a 13-12 home loss to the Sea Gulls at home.
For Salisbury (12-0, 3-0 CAC), the win was its second on the road against the nation’s No. 1-ranked team in the last week after an 11-10 overtime victory at Gettysburg last Saturday. It was also the Sea Gulls’ third win in the last four at Caves Athletics Complex.
Rodriguez limited the nation’s fourth-best scoring offense to its lowest output of the season. A year ago, he totaled 11 saves, including six in the second half in Salisbury’s 13-5 win over Stevenson in the CAC championship game.
Tied at the half, the two teams played as even of a first half as possible as both had 18 shots and five saves. The Mustangs held a slim 13-12 edge in ground balls while the Sea Gulls won 10-of-18 face-offs.
However, Salisbury took control of the game by scoring four of five third quarter goals, including tallies from Mike Winter, Matt Cannone and Sam Bradman. The Sea Gulls then scored the first four consecutive goals of the fourth to build a seven-goal advantage.
Stevenson led by two on three different occasions in the first half, the last of which came on a goal by junior Kenny Whittaker (Baltimore/Curley) that was assisted by junior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) to give the Mustangs an 8-6 lead with 3:45 remaining in the second quarter.
Bradman scored his first just 15 seconds later before Winter netted his third of the first half on the man advantage with only 43 seconds left to tie the game at halftime.
Junior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winters Mill) had a game-high five points for Stevenson on three goals and two assists while Whittaker, senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) and junior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul) each had two points.
Witte won 16-of-29 face-offs and of the 13 he lost, eight were because he was whistled for a false start. Salisbury was also called for four false starts.
Winter totaled five points and four goals for the Sea Gulls. Cannone and Mike Von Kamecke each added three goals and one assist.
Senior Andrew Harrington (Cambridge/South Dorchester) made a career-high nine saves.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Stevenson women’s lacrosse team received its highest-ever national ranking for the third time this season on Monday as the Mustangs were ranked at No. 17 in the latest IWLCA Division III Poll.
Stevenson moved up one spot in the national rankings for the second-straight week and remains one of three teams from the CAC ranked in this week’s poll. The NESCAC continues to lead all conferences with seven schools.
Salisbury maintained its No. 1 ranking despite having to hold off a second half charge from the Mustangs on the road Saturday en route to a 14-10 victory while Mary Washington fell three spots to No. 19 after a 21-15 loss to then-No. 19 Catholic.
Stevenson’s eight wins are the third-most of any team ranked among the top 20. The team hosts a CAC contest with St. Mary’s (Md.) on Saturday where prior to the game, the Mustangs will honor their four seniors in Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus), Brittany Connelly (Catonsville/Catonsville), Brittany Hilton (Barnesville/Poolesvile) and Kristyna Hnizda (Manchester/North Carroll).

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Trailing 10-3 less than two minutes into the second half, Stevenson scored six of the game’s next seven goals, including three from junior Megan Weiss (Odenton/Seton), but No. 1 Salisbury netted three of the final four and held on for a 14-10 victory over the 18th-ranked Mustangs Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.
The loss was the first in the last seven at home for Stevenson (8-4, 3-2 CAC) who held the Sea Guls to their third-lowest output of the season.
Weiss and senior Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus) combined for seven of the Mustangs’ 10 goals, including five of their seven in the second half.
With three points, Weiss now has 99 for her career. She scored all three of her goals in a span of 2:22 in the second half as Stevenson scored four-straight to rally from a six-goal deficit and pull within two with over 14 minutes remaining.
Weiss started the run with her first goal on a free position at 16:34 before senior Kristyna Hnizda (Manchester/North Carroll) added her lone tally at 14:55. Weiss then followed with back-to-back goals just 24 seconds apart as the Mustangs totaled three goals in a span of only 43 seconds.
Salisbury (12-0, 4-0 CAC) maintained its two goal advantage after Zegowitz’s fourth goal of the contest with 5:55 left and sealed its 47th-straight CAC victory after goals by Trish DiGirolomo and Logan Bilderback in the final 3:16.
Stevenson held a 34-33 edge in shots, 17-9 advantage in draw controls and committed 13 less fouls then the Sea Gulls, but could not overcome a six-goal first half deficit in which it totaled 10 turnovers and was 5-of-9 on clears.
The Mustangs managed to stay within striking distance due to the play of sophomore Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton Keough) who made seven of her 11 saves in the half while facing 21 Salisbury shots.
DiGirolomo had a game-high six points for the Sea Gulls while Aileen McCausland had four goals and Kim Cudmore finished with one goal and two assists. Julie Ann Caulfield had nine saves before Keli Berkman made two over the final 12:30 to preserve the win.
Stevenson hosts St. Mary’s (Md.) next Saturday on Senior Day.

SALISBURY, Md. – Stevenson baseball sophomore D.J. Milliken (Owings/Northern) earned his second win in his second start this season while helping the Mustangs snap a 13-game losing streak to Salisbury Saturday as they took game one against the No. 6-ranked Sea Gulls 6-4 before dropping game two, 7-2.
The last win for Stevenson (13-6, 7-6 CAC) against its conference rival came back on April 27, 2006 when Salisbury was ranked at No. 2 in Division III and riding a 12-game winning streak. The Mustangs won the game 1-0 behind a two-hit shutout from freshman and current assistant coach Wade Keenan.
On Saturday, Milliken allowed just four hits and four runs over six innings before sophomore Patrick Quinn (Mt. Airy/Linganore) earned his third save after retiring three of the four batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh.
Stevenson trailed 2-0 after four before scoring all six runs with two outs in the top of the fifth, including four after a Sea Gull error that should have ended the inning.
After RBI singles by freshman Heath Johnson (New Castle, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and junior Chris Maienshein (Finksburg/Westminster), senior Ryan Baione (Waldorf/Westlake) reached on an error by Salisbury third baseman Chad Wolfe that allowed Johnson to score.
Sophomore Justin Anderson (Shrewsbury, Pa./Calvert Hall) followed with a two-run double to left center that scored Maienshein and Baione to give the Mustangs the lead for good. They then added an insurance run when Anderson scored on an RBI single by senior George Papuchis (Damascus/Good Counsel).
Brad Baylis homered to lead off the fifth to cut the Salisbury deficit in half before leading off the seventh with a double and later scoring on a wild pitch.
