OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The No. 2-ranked Stevenson men’s lacrosse scored six of the game’s final seven goals, including two from senior Dave Cougler (Rochester, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley), to blow open a one-goal game in the third quarter en route to an 11-5 victory over No. 16 Western New England Sunday at Caves Athletics Complex.

The win was the eighth for Stevenson (4-0) in the last two seasons against a team ranked in the top-20 and its 11th consecutive at home.

The Mustangs led 5-1 with 3:07 remaining in the second quarter after junior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winters Mill) scored the first of his two goals off an assist from junior Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East).

However, the Golden Bears (0-2) scored back-to-back goals only 43 seconds apart in the final minute by Patrick White and Andrew Mariani to pull within two at halftime, 5-3.

Corigan Harreys scored off a feed from Tim Santye with a man advantage at the 12:03 mark of the third quarter as Western New England trailed by just one, 5-4. The goal capped a span of 10 minutes in which the team scored four of the game’s five goals to rally from a four-goal deficit.

Senior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) scored three of Stevenson’s first six goals with his last coming at 10:22 in the third quarter that started a 6-0 run for the Mustangs to push their lead to 11-4 after senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) tallied his first with 12:43 left in the fourth.

Ford finished with four points to lead all scorers while Dailey, Moffitt and Cougler each totaled two goals and one assist.

Stevenson held a 47-21 edge in shots, including a 23-10 advantage in the second half, but was 0-for-10 with with a man advantage. Neither team’s man-up offense was effective as the Golden Bears were 1-of-5.

TOWSON, Md. – Stevenson men’s lacrosse senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) scored nine points on five goals and four assists, to lead an explosive Mustang offense that outscored Kean 22-3 over the final three quarters en route to a 24-4 victory this past Saturday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University.

The win was the 19th-straight regular season victory for Stevenson (2-0) and the ninth consecutive in a home opener.

The Mustangs also improved their record to 2-0 in games at Towson after the team knocked off Alvernia, 12-2 on Mar. 8, 2005 in the first career game under sixth-year head coach Paul Cantabene.

Stevenson outshot the Cougars 61-21 and were a perfect 16-of-16 on clears.

Kazimer, a unanimous selection for preseason player and attackman of the year, finished just one point shy of his career-high of 10 set in a 19-13 win over Messiah on Mar. 3, 2008 when he totaled a school record nine goals.

The school record for points in a game is held by Bob Reinheimer who had five goals and seven assists in an 18-9 win over Lycoming on Mar. 31, 2001.

Kazimer was one 13 different goal scorers, including three who had at least three goals. A total of 15 players had at least one point for Stevenson who scored 20 or more goals for the 10th time in six seasons under Cantabene.

Kazimer scored the first two goals of the game for the Mustangs before Scott Leathem tallied to pull Kean within one. Despite outshooting the Cougars 15-4, Stevenson led by just one in a low-scoring first quarter.

The Mustangs’ took a 10-3 halftime lead after scoring eight goals on 18 shots, including two each from Kazimer and juniors Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winters Mill) and Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson).

Dailey totaled four goals and two assists while Ford added three and two, respectively.

Kazimer had a hand in four of Stevenson’s first five goals of the third quarter, assisting on three, as the team took a commanding 16-4 lead.

The Mustangs added another eight goals in the fourth quarter, six of which marked the first of the season and two that were the first in the careers of junior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul) and freshman Zach Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine).

Senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) made 12 saves, three shy of his career-high before giving way to senior Andrew Harrington (Easton/South Dorchester) and freshman Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) who made his first career appearance.

C.J. Gannon led the Cougars (1-1) with one goal and two assists while John Gesumaria had 10 saves.

ST. DAVID’S, Pa. – Stevenson men’s lacrosse junior Jimmy Dailey (Westminster/Winter Mills) scored three of the Mustangs first 12 goals as they outscored Widener 12-1 over the second and third quarters en route to a 15-3 victory Sunday in the season opener for both teams at Eastern University’s Olson Field.

The win was the 18th consecutive in the regular season for Stevenson (1-0) and the sixth in as many season openers under head coach Paul Cantabene. The Mustangs also opened last season with a win over Widener, 7-6 at Caves Athletics Complex.

Nate Meyer scored off an assist from Brian Rogers five minutes into the game to give Widener (0-1) a one-goal lead which it would hold until junior UMBC transfer Dave Scott (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) scored his first goal as a Mustang with a man-advantage at 2:46 to tie the game after the first quarter.

Scott’s goal was the first of 12-straight tallies for Stevenson who led 5-1 at halftime and 13-2 after three.

Dailey netted the first two goals of the second quarter, the second of which came at 7:46 off an assist from junior Richie Ford (Baltimore/Towson) before junior captain Kyle Moffitt (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) scored what proved to be the game-winner just 31 seconds later.

Also of note, freshman Andrew Bishop (Lothian/Southern) scored his first career goal to give the Mustangs a 5-1 lead at 4:53 of the second quarter, less than 24 hours after playing in his 25th and final game of the season for the Stevenson men’s basketball team.

Ford and consensus attackman and player of the year, senior Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger),each finished with five points with Ford totaling two goals and three assists and Kazimer adding one goal and four assists.

Dailey finished with four goals while Scott and junior CCBC Essex transfer Neal Barthelme each scored twice. Senior Dave Cougler (Rochester, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) also netted a third quarter goal.

Junior Ray Witte (Annapolis/St. Peter and Paul) won 14-of-19 face-offs and picked up a career-high eight ground balls. Senior Geoff Hebert (Lutherville/Dulaney) made nine saves in 52 minutes before giving way to senior Andrew Harrington (Cambridge/South Dorchester).

Stevenson held a 39-24 advantage in shots, including a 25-10 margin over the second and third quarters while scoring on five of six extra-man opportunities.

Meyer was one of three different scorers for The Pride while Kevin Carney and Bobbt Schluter had 10 and two saves, respectively.

The Mustangs make their home debut next Saturday, February 27 when they welcome Kean to Caves Athletics Complex. Game time is at 2:00 p.m., following the women’s game versus Ursinus at noon.

When I arrived at Stevenson University’s Owings Mills Campus today, only two lanes of traffic on were open on the boulevard. But as the snow begun to fall this afternoon the road was getting close to three passable lanes open south of the entrance.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – On November 11th, Stevenson women’s soccer freshman Kayla Curry [center] (Timonium/John Carroll) scored her first career goal just over three minutes into the second overtime to keep the Mustangs unbeaten in their last 12 as they posted a 3-2 victory over Moravian Wednesday in the first round of the ECAC Division III South Championship.

The win was the first for Stevenson (15-3-2) in three ECAC appearances and ties a school record for wins in a season set by the 2006 squad.

The Mustangs advance to Saturday’s semifinals where they will play the winner between sixth-seeded Centenary and third-seeded Swarthmore which takes place Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.

The site of the semifinals will be determined by the outcome of Wednesday’s game between eighth-seeded LaRoche and top-seeded Penn State-Altoona.

Stevenson is now 3-1-2 in overtime games this season, including 3-0-2 at home. The team is also 4-2 in postseason play, snapping a two-game ECAC skid after first round road losses in 1999 and 2008.

Moravian (8-8-2) started the scoring less than four minutes into the game when the team’s leading scorer, Arielle Caldas scored unassisted at 3:25 to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead.

The goal marked the first time that the Mustangs had trailed in a span of three games and 181:59 since Steph Mergler scored at 3:25 in the team’s 3-1 victory over York (Pa.) in the semifinals of the CAC Women’s Soccer Championship.

Moravian held the lead until the 37th minute when Stevenson’s leading scorer, sophomore Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin), scored on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1 at halftime.

The game would remained tied until Caldas scored her 13th of the season in the 61st minute to put the Greyhounds back in front before Eyler answered with her 22nd in the 70th.

With 22 goals this season, Eyler ties her own single season CAC record which she set last season en route to earning CAC Rookie of the Year honors. She now has 44 goals and 97 career points in just 40 games.

Senior Katie Decker (White Hall/Hereford) picked up her team-leading 11th assist on the game-tying goal and leads the team with 15 over the last two seasons.

Despite holding a 15-7 edge in shots at the end of regulation and an 18-8 edge after the first overtime, Stevenson could not get the game-winner until its third attempt of the second overtime when Curry split two Greyhound defenders and scored just inside the left post under a diving Tori Korona.

Korona finished with eight saves for Moravian who was outshot 21-8 and on the short side of a 10-5 margin in corner kicks.

Meanwhile, Mustang sophomore Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna Park) made six saves and picked up her sixth win in goal after playing the final 58:02 in relief of freshman Lauren Weitzman (Westminster/Winters Mill) who made one in the first half.

SALISBURY, MD. – Stevenson men’s soccer sophomore Kyle Baker (Mitchellville/Bowie) [pictured above] scored the game’s only goal with just 1:10 remaining before halftime to give the Mustangs a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Salisbury this afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium in the semifinals of the CAC Men’s Soccer Championship.

The win is the seventh-straight for Stevenson (12-8), one shy of the school record set in 2005, and advances the team to conference championship game for the first time since joining the CAC in 2007.

The win also avenged a 4-0 loss suffered on the same field back on October 7, the last time that Stevenson has suffered defeat, and was the first in eight all-time meetings against the Sea Gulls.

The Mustangs, who will be just the second Stevenson team to play for a CAC championship, are now just three wins shy of setting a new school record for wins in a season set in 2005 as well.

While Baker gets credit for his seventh goal of the season and his second game-winner, the Mustang defense, particularly sophomore keeper Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), was instrumental as the Sea Gulls held a 26-2 advantage in shots and a 17-2 margin in corner kicks.

Flannelly finished the game with a career-high 14 saves in earning his fourth shutout of the season. Nine of his saves came in the second half where the Mustangs were outshot 14-0.

Baker’s goal was his third in as many games and came after he controlled a loose ball just inside the box and fired it into the upper left corner.

Stevenson will not get a second shot at redemption when it travels to York (Pa.) on Saturday for the CAC title game. The Mustangs have not beaten the Spartans in the last 11 meetings, posting an 0-9-2 record.

In addition, the last time the two teams met in the CAC tournament came back in 2007 where York (Pa.) prevailed 8-0 at home in the semifinals.

Game time on Saturday is at 2:00 p.m., from Graham Field.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Led by three first half goals, including two by sophomore Stephanie Eyler (Thurmont/Catoctin), the Stevenson women’s soccer team looked impressive as it moved into first place in the CAC with a 4-1 victory over York (Pa.) Wednesday afternoon at Caves Athletics Complex.

The win was the seventh-straight for the Mustangs (11-3-1, 6-1 CAC) and the second-straight against the Spartans who were ranked at No. 7 in the first South Atlantic Region rankings released on Wednesday.

Last year, Stevenson edged York on the road 1-0 on a goal by Samantha Novy (Severna Park/Severna Park) in the 37th minute on Oct. 21, 2008.

All three of the Mustangs’ three goals in the opening half came in the first 28 minutes, beginning with Eyler’s unassisted tally in the 15th.

Junior Allison Humphries (Bel Air/John Carroll) would score the eventual game-winner with her second of the season off a pass from senior Lauren Bauer (Baltimore/Bel Air) in the 22nd minute before Eyler added her third just over five minutes later at 27:09.

The assist was the second point of the season for Bauer and the third of her career, all coming on assists. In addition to picking up an assist in the team’s 10-0 win versus Gallaudet, she also assisted on Novy’s game-winner against York last year.

Stevenson held a 3-0 halftime lead despite only holding a 7-3 edge in shots and being even in corner kicks at 3-3.

Determined, the Spartans (12-4-1, 5-1-1 CAC) would get on the board in the first two minutes of the second half as Kat Sipes netted her fourth of the season unassisted at 46:51 to cut the deficit to 3-1.

York outshot Stevenson 13-3 in the second half and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, but Mustang freshman Lauren Weitzman (Wesminster/Winters Mill) totaled three of her five saves in the half and freshman Melinda Kane (Baltimore/Mercy) added her eighth goal of the season in the 68th minute for insurance as Stevenson handed the Spartans their first conference loss in the last eight games.

Spanarkel made two saves for the Spartans.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Breanne Russell scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just four minutes into the game as Frostburg State snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over Stevenson in non-conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Caves Athletics Complex.

The Mustangs (4-10) dominated the game statistically, but could not avoid the shutout despite holding a 22-10 advantage in shots and an 11-6 margin in penalty corners.

Russell scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season on the game’s first shot which held until the final 18 seconds when Brooke Tapman, who ranks second on the team in scoring behind Russell, netted her fifth of the year.

The loss was the seventh in nine home games this season for Stevenson. It was also the team’s fourth by shutout.

Maggie Edwards had 10 saves for Frostburg State (7-7) while Mustang junior Kara Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) recorded four. She now needs just five to break the school’s career record.

Prior to the game, Stevenson honored its two seniors in Sarah Bauer (Baltimore/Perry Hall) and Raechel Manly (Bel Air/Bel Air). Manly has appeared in 71 of the team’s 72 games during her four-year career, totaling 18 points on eight goals and two assists while Bauer has played in 64 games with 62 starts and has 22 points with eight goals and six assists.
